2025: Five Suggestions for Effective Reputation Management
In 2025, organizations and brands will face a wide range of changes that will shape their reputations. To help navigate these challenges, here are five ideas we should all consider—or reconsider.
1. Fighting Misinformation
Journalists often claim they are constantly battling misinformation. Meanwhile, what are public relations strategists doing?
Take the phrase “public relations operation,” for example. This term is overused and often misapplied to mean ” false image campaign” or outright “lies.”
EARNING RESPECT MEANS DEFENDING THE ESSENTIAL ROLE PLAYED BY PUBLIC RELATIONS STRATEGISTS AND COMBATING MISINFORMATION.
At Mesure Média, we frequently reach out to political offices and news analysts to clarify misconceptions about public relations. By sharing the Canadian Public Relations Society’s ethical definition of PR, we’ve encouraged many to abandon the phrase “public relations operations.”
2. Rethinking DEI with a Fresh Perspective
Introduced a few years ago as a major societal advance, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) approach is now facing challenges.
In many cases, the intended openness of DEI has inadvertently fostered division, particularly in the U.S. and increasingly elsewhere. A recent study by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), in collaboration with l’Université Rutgers, highlights how certain “anti-oppressive” pedagogies can create hostility between groups instead of fostering inclusivity.
Is it possible to reconcile opposing values, symbols, and groups engaged in public opinion battles?
In 2025, some organizations will maintain a firm commitment to DEI, others will adapt their approach, and some may step back entirely. Your decision won’t please everyone—and that’s okay. What matters is aligning your DEI strategy with your organization’s values and communicating those motivations internally.
ORGANIZATIONS MUST ADAPT THEIR DEI STRATEGIES TO BALANCE INCLUSIVITY AND PRAGMATISM WHILE CONSIDERING THE NUANCES OF THEIR AUDIENCES.
3. Practicing Humility
Not long ago, large project management boiled down to: “Here’s what we’ve decided, and you have to accept it.” Thankfully, those days are long gone. Across industries, social acceptability will remain essential in 2025, leaving behind the era when managers imposed their ideas unilaterally.
HUMILITY AND COLLABORATION ARE ESSENTIAL. IN 2025, ENGAGING STAKEHOLDERS EARLY AND INTEGRATING THEIR FEEDBACK WILL ENSURE PROJECT SUCCESS.
A Plan B or C that builds consensus will always be better than a Plan A that gets blocked. Recognize, too, that a brand’s reputation often depends on the actions—both good and bad—of its employees, which communication teams cannot fully control.
4. Being Smart with AI
With the exponential rise of artificial intelligence, it’s more constructive to embrace it than to resist it.
AI tools like chatbots and translation systems make information more accessible and democratized with just a few clicks. However, while preliminary research is one thing, thoughtful, informed, and ethical decision-making is another.
AI IS A POWERFUL ALLY, BUT HUMAN INSIGHT AND ETHICS REMAIN IRREPLACEABLE.
How should we respond? Use AI to streamline initial data analysis, but ensure final decisions are made by experienced professionals. Be resourceful, cautious, and open to change.
5. Daring to Measure
Just a decade ago, public affairs strategists relied on subjective estimations to justify results, while their marketing and advertising counterparts presented data-packed reports. Thankfully, times have changed.
TODAY, REPUTATION MANAGEMENT IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY. IT IS ASSESSED USING BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE DATA AND INDEPENDENT ANALYSES.
In 2025, leaders across all sectors will demand more insights into the impact of their successes on their reputation—and into the reputation deficits caused by media coverage. With advanced tools available, data-driven insights should be a cornerstone of every reputation strategy.
Here’s to a year of ethical successes, meaningful progress, and reputational excellence!
